The Mechanical Engineering Department of St. John College of Engineering and Management (SJCEM), established in 2011, has consistently focused on academic excellence, industrial exposure, and practical skill development. Over the years, the department has evolved into a strong learning hub, providing quality education and hands-on training to aspiring engineers.
Our department is supported by modern laboratories and excellent infrastructure that enable practical learning and experimentation. These include:
- Thermal Engineering Lab
- Strength of Materials Lab
- Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics Lab
- Theory of Machines Lab
- Automobile and IC Engine Lab
- Manufacturing and Workshop Practice Lab
- Metrology & Quality Control Lab
- CAD/CAM Lab with advanced workstation systems
- Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Lab
- 3-D Printing Lab
A major advantage for students is access to the AICTE-Sponsored IDEA Lab, which promotes creativity, innovation, design thinking, and entrepreneurship. The IDEA Lab is equipped with advanced facilities such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC equipment, electronics workstations, and rapid prototyping tools. It provides a platform for students to convert ideas into prototypes, develop product concepts, and participate in design innovation challenges. This lab significantly enhances experiential learning and supports interdisciplinary project work.
The department places strong emphasis on innovative student projects. Students regularly undertake major and minor projects that address real-world engineering challenges, contribute to industrial applications, or offer solutions to community-based needs.
A key highlight is the department’s Go-Kart Design and Fabrication Project, where students design, manufacture, and test a fully operational Go-Kart vehicle. Participation in national-level Go-Kart racing competitions and design challenges gives students hands-on experience in design calculations, material selection, power transmission, ergonomics, safety considerations, and performance optimization.
Our faculty team comprises highly qualified and experienced members who are dedicated to student development. Faculty mentors guide students in curriculum learning, project development, skill enhancement, and research work. Their mix of academic expertise and industry exposure ensures that students are fully prepared for professional careers.
